Optus and Telstra are now closing their 3G networks and repurposing them to provide greater speed, capacity and reliability for their 4G and 5G networks. \u003C/p>\u003Cp> \u003C/p>\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>How 3G devices will be affected\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\u003Cp>After the 3G network closes on 28th October 2024 if you are on the Telstra network, or from September 2024 if you use the Optus network, 3G services will no longer be available. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>If you have a 3G device, you’ll be unable to make calls (including 000 emergency calls), send texts or access the internet using the mobile network you are currently on. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>Affected devices could include mobile phones, tablets and personal medical or security devices. You’ll need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G compatible device to stay connected. \u003C/p>\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>The \u003Ca href=\"https://www.telstra.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telstra\u003C/a> 3G Device Checker SMS\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\u003Cp>The 3G Device Checker SMS service is a complimentary tool that you can share with your customers to help you figure out if your mobile phone is affected by the 3G network shutdown.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>To check if your mobile phone is affected by the 3G network shutdown, \u003Cstrong>simply text &#39;3G&#39; to 3498.\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Check if your device will be affected\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\u003Cp>Most devices won’t be affected and will still work on the 4G and 5G network. Not all devices are compatible with this spectrum – even recent models purchased in Australia or overseas could be affected. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>4G devices that are incompatible with L700 MHz will still be able to access the Optus or Telstra network, but there will be impacts to coverage. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>If you’re not sure if your device is compatible with LTE 700 MHz, check with the device’s user manual or manufacturer.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003C/p>\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>Other devices that may be affected\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\u003Cp>Personal medical or security devices that completely rely on the 3G network will stop working after 28 October 2024 if you use the Telstra network, or from September 2024 if you use the Optus network.  Check with the device’s manual or manufacturer to see if this affects you and upgrade any affected devices as soon as possible.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Some impacted devices may still work but will have reduced network coverage. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003C/p>\u003Ch4>\u003Cstrong>3G devices: what you need to know\u003C/strong>\u003C/h4>\u003Cp>If your device can only use 3G, you’ll need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G device before the 3G network closure commences from 28 October 2024 if you use the Telstra network or September 2024 if you use the Optus network.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>You can buy a 4G or 5G compatible device or ask your family and friends if they have a spare one you could use. Be sure to check the device’s manual or manufacturer to make sure it’s compatible.\u003C/p>\u003Cp> \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Do I need to upgrade my mobile SIM plan as well?\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Cp>No, you do not need to change your mobile SIM plan. Your new device will work on the existing plan. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Will I need a new SIM card if I change devices?\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Depending on what type of device you get, you may be able to keep using your current SIM card. If your current SIM card won’t fit in your new device or you’re not sure, contact us. Your mobile device will use 4G to make and receive calls in areas where 4G (LTE) is available.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>When the Optus and Telstra 3G networks closes, VoLTE will be required to make or receive phone calls on the Optus and Telstra mobile networks.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>If you have a 3G mobile device, you must upgrade to a 4G or 5G mobile device that is VoLTE compatible before your network closes. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>If you have a 4G compatible mobile device that doesn’t support VoLTE, after 28 October 2024 for Telstra network users and from September 2024 for Optus network users it will not be able to make or receive voice calls, including 000 emergency calls on the mobile network you are currently on.
